“What an awesome story. This inspires me a lot.” — James Hetfield, Metallica

The inspirational story of Acrassicauda, an Iraqi heavy metal band, whose members’ struggle to stay alive as their country fell into bloody insurgency echoes the unspoken hopes of an entire generation of young Iraqis.Born out of a basement rehearsal space in Baghdad and inspired by western bands like Metallica, Slayer, and Slipknot, Acrassicauda (“Black Scorpion”) played only three live shows in Iraq before the country began to disintegrate around them. Rebels and religious fundamentalists accused them of Satan worship. Eventually it became impossible to find any venue where they could safely perform. Still, they refused to let their dreams die.In their internationally acclaimed, award-winning documentary, Suroosh Alvi and Eddy Moretti’s raw, uncensored portrayal of daily life in war-torn Iraq struck a chord with music fans around the world. Featuring never-before-seen (more…)

Steppenwolf band leader, John Kay ( originally, Joachim Fritz Krauledat) was born in 1944 in a section of Germany known at the time by the name of East Prussia. John never had thechance to meet his father. His dad was killed fighting in Russia one month before John was born. When John was months old, his Motherfled with the young baby to East Germany. East Germany however, was soon controlled by the Communists, and at the age of four hisMom once again took her young son and began a successful, but hazardous escape into West Germany.

John Kay spent his childhood growing up in Hannover, West Germany while listening to American rock and roll which was broadcast on U.S. Armed Forces Radio.

In 1958, John and hisMom moved again, this time to Toronto, Ontario Canada. Once in Canada, John Kay immersed himself in the world of music and in 1966, he formed a band named Sparrow. However, SparrowDidn’t last very long and disbanded one year later.

John Kay then moved to Los Angelas and with much encouragement from ABC-Dunhill Records staff producer, Gabriel Mekler, formed a new band which included Sparrow’s drummer, Jerry Edmonton and Keyboardist, Goldy McJohn. The threesome then recruited a very young guitarist by the name of Michael Monarch and bassist, Rushton Moreve. They named themselves, “Steppenwolf”, after Hermann Hesse’s novel of the same name.

Steppenwolf released their debut album in 1968. The self titled album took only four days to record but would become a Hugesuccess for the band. The album turned out the song “born to be wild” which became an instant success with the younger generation while becoming a contributor to the new genre of music of heavy metal. The song’s popularity and the reference of “heavy metal thunder” in the song put a tag to the new sound that was filling the radio airwaves. The song was later used in Dennis Hopper’s classic film “Easy Rider”.

Steppenwolf also turned out other hits, such as “magic carpet ride”, Rock Me, Move Over and Hey Lawdy, but by the early 70’s the band’s popularity fell and they disbanded.

John Kay continued to involve himself with music, but was never as successful as he was with Steppenwolf.
